As a mental health specialist I have problem with this.
A true bipolar diagnosis (and there are some out there) has been around a long time. When I was in
graduate school in the early 80's I learned that the disorder, also referred to as manic depressive disorder, meant
severe mood swings as described in the video.
These were easily managed and treated with a mineral found naturally in most people's body called
lithium.
When lithium levels in the body are too low the symptoms are present. When lithium
levels are normal the symptoms of bipolar go away. How simple is that?
But now, we have thousands of people (including children) diagnosed with bipolar when they have
other problems:
anger management problems or
post traumatic stress disorder,
sexual abuse, or
obsessive compulsive tendencies.
The pharmaceutical companies are treating these mis- diagnoses with a myriad of drugs that are not needed. If there
is a true bipolar disorder, treat it with lithium. For other problems, look for the source.
We must stop treating people’s normal emotions with potentially serious and addictive drugs that
have yet to be tested on young brains and are not designed to replenish lithium.
We need to go back to our original criteria and our original treatment because it works; without
drugging millions of our fellow citizens unnecessarily.
