If you've been
asking: "what is the Paleo diet?" and "is the Paleo Diet right for me?" we've got some answers for you
here...
But "What is the Paleo Diet?," you ask?
The Paleo diet is fairly simple but not easy to follow in a modern urban setting. A limited number of foods are
allowed: basically the modern equivalent of what our Hunter-Gatherer ancestors would of consumed. All Farmed
products including all grains and dairy, are eliminated.
Also known as the Caveman diet, practioners seek to reduce their chances of developing modern diseases like
coranary heart disease and Type 2 Diabetes and to build muscle mass, strength and endurance.
Exactly what was included varied by location but generally the following items are included.
- Many Paleo diets rely heavily on meats but a wide variety of fruits and vegetables along with nuts and
seeds are allowed.
-
- The meats used in the Paleo diet need to be either wild or grass-fed. Eating meats raised on grains
would violate the no grains ideal.
- The organ meats from wild or grass-fed animals are included but processed meats like sausages are
not.
- Fish should be wild caught. If your Paleo diet does not include wild caught fish every week, you may want
to use a fish oil supplement.
- Some oils from fruits like olives and nuts including coconuts are included. Seeds are allowed as condiments
but seed oils come from the Neolithic, farming culture so they are out.
- Expand your diet’s variety by adding leafy greens and herbs our Paleolithic ancestors would of found by
foraging. Peterson's field guide: A Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants: Eastern and central North America (Peterson Field
Guide) can help you safely add variety to your Paleo diet.
- Salt and, obviously, sugar, should be removed from your kitchen. The only truly Paleo sweetener is raw
honey. Coconut meat and water can also be used but regularly adding sweeteners is not recommended.
- For drinks, water is the only really Paleo approved beverage. Herb teas and green tea (organic) can be
used. Your water needs to be from unpolluted springs.
- Alcohol is generally not part of a Paleo diet. Most Hunter-Gatherers didn’t ferment or distill fruit juices
though some may have kept wild grape juices in skin flasks until it became fermented. Depending on
their availability, Paleo people may of chewed on cannabis or cocoa leaves for recreational or spiritual
purposes.

But what do real, 21st century people have to say about switching to the Paleo Diet?
Mark Sisson says: "I have been on
the paleo lifestyle since the beginning of the year. I love it and with being a college student I needed something
that would keep me on the go while still being easy and cheap. Paleo holds it all in every
aspect. I have tried some but my favorites are paleo pancakes, and paleo
cookies, I don't cook a lot so these were really easy and delicious!"
Nessie @ lasting-weight-loss.com/index.html March 27,
2008 "I’m so pleased to learn that you advocate the Paleo Diet. I have used a Paleolithic diet for
over twenty-five years. It’s a good diet for health and it’s a good diet for natural weight loss. It’s the way our
species evolved to eat."
Greg Battaglia Level I Crossfit trainer & dietetics
student at Immaculata University says: "Paleo Cookbooks are amazing! They include everything from
light summer salads to hearty winter soups, all without using any of the unhealthy ingredients that typically
accompany our favorite dishes. The Paleo Cookbooks clearly show that eating healthy does not in any way have to
be boring or tasteless. If you want flavor and healthy all in one shot The Paleo Cookbooks
are the way to go"
Andrew Rubalcava, recognized
